Don Bobillo,

The first Volunteer Caddie Master, longtime caddie master for the Phoenix Open and other major Arizona golf tournaments was honored by The Thunderbirds at their annual Phoenix Open Tee-Off Luncheon with the 2001 Dick Rolls "Volunteer of the Year" award.

The annual award is The Thunderbirds legacy to Dick Rolls, one of the tournament's most respected and loyal volunteers who passed away in 1992. Bobillo (pronounced buh-BILL-oh) worked at the Phoenix Open since the early 1970's, and had been the caddie master since 1988, before retiring after the 2001 event for health reasons.

Bobillo is a native of Indiana and a former Salt River Project employee, who has been widely recognized for his volunteerism to the Arizona golf community. He worked a combination of more than 80 years as caddie master at the Phoenix Open, Tucson Open, Tradition and PING LPGA events, along with providing additional volunteer support to the Arizona Golf Association (AGA).

In 1994, he was named AGA "Volunteer of the Year" and last year he received the AGA's highest honor, the Updegraff Award recognizing "those who by their actions or accomplishments, exemplify the spirit of the game of golf." Each year, thousands of volunteers commit their time and energy to the Phoenix Open.

Along with the 55 Active Thunderbirds and more than 250 Life Thunderbirds who sponsor and run the tournament, community volunteers like Don Bobillo play a key role in making the Phoenix Open one of golf's most successful events on the PGA TOUR.
